- 강연 주제 : Emerging Quantum Phenomena in Two-Dimensional Charge Density Wave Materials
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a fascinating platform for exploring emergent quantum phenomena arising from the interplay between charge, spin, and electron correlation. Among them, 1T-TMD materials have attracted considerable attention due to the formation of charge density waves (CDWs) and the appearance of strongly correlated electronic states. In this colloquium, I will first introduce the basic concepts of CDWs and discuss how lattice distortions can dramatically modify the electronic properties of low-dimensional materials. I will then present recent developments in monolayer 1T-TMDs, where scanning tunneling microscopy experiments have suggested an alternative “anion-centered David star” structure beyond the conventional picture widely assumed in the literature. Interestingly, this newly proposed structure naturally breaks inversion symmetry and generates flat electronic bands with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. These features open new possibilities for realizing exotic quantum states and functionalities, including giant spin Hall effects, Chern bands, and unconventional spin-liquid phases. Through this talk, I aim to provide an accessible overview of how structural symmetry, electron correlation, and spin-orbit coupling cooperate in two-dimensional materials to create rich and unexpected quantum phenomena.
